Dear Aunty Clara,
Tuesday

This evening letter is beginning rather early at approximately seven o'clock. Needless to say I am leaving the show go by the board this evening. Not so much because I have strong will power but mostly because all the available shows have been seen and reseen by me and I don't think I care to sit through something I've already seen. Not that I haven't looked around though. Here they have "Naughty But Nice", down at the Seabees they have "Young Ideas" while at the outfit at the bottom of the hill they have "As Thousands Cheer".

There was a great big advertisement reprinted by the Island Command and taken from the pages of the Yank magazine and it was all about Guadalcanal. No kidding, this article was the real thing at last. The write up which you sent to me from Senor Gonzalez had a lot of truth in it but it lacked up-to-dateness and it was also erroneous in some spots since it covered unique cases instead of thing common to all troops on this island. This Yank write-up tells all and it is very, very true --- it is entitled "Guadalcanal Goes Garrison". All of it is not there, however, since some printing covers sections of the photographed page. When we get the edition of Yank here on the island, Jack says he will copy it out in duplicate and I will send it to you.

My conscience tells me to write letters to other people this evening but somehow the spirit says no. Perhaps I can get started off on the right foot by writing one to Uncle Jack. It is always easy for me to write to him and perhaps that will be like priming the pump and I'll be able to continue on from there and answer them all.

Another thing which keeps me in this evening listening to the radio is the mystery story which comes on the air at 8:30. In fact, I may have told you that on three consecutive days from now on (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) at 8:30 we are going to have mystery stories. On one day we will have "The Hermit's Cave", the next day will be "Suspense" (which moved from its Sunday spot) and that will be followed on the third evening by "The Inner Sanctum". All in all it may have something to do with helping me keep my long unfulfilled promise of staying in at night instead of meandering off the area to shows. You remember the "Hermit" don't you, with his hideous laugh?

You sure are snaring a record total of mice, aren't you? When we build our house, we are going to make sure that it is mouse proof or at least as mouse proof as we can make it, reet?

I did not describe the card which the Michalaks sent to me. The front of it has an American flag on a staff with a white silk tassel dangling from the card and the words are written across the face "Congratulations on your Promotion". The second sheet has the words "It's fine to know you have won this recognition, and here's wishing you continued success, and the best of luck," signed by Uncle Leo & Aunt Lillian.

The PX is selling wooden shower clogs these days and the fellows are buying them up like hot cakes. They have finally wisened up that it isn't sissy stuff to wear them in the shower rooms to keep the feet from coming into contact with the germs that may be laying in wait. Mrs. Boyer sure did pick out good presents when she bought me the water clogs and the wallet just before I went into the Army. But say, as I recall wasn't it you who she telephoned for that idea?

Holy cow, this is never going to get me anywheres tonight if I keep on listening to the radio and watch Lt Bellows insecticide those giant beetles to death. I think he dislikes them more than I do. Oh, oh, Gary Moore is on the air with his craziness. Maybe it is better to go to the show.

So-long,   /s/ Roman   Roman
