                            THE 398TH ASF BAND

                        By Rollo Fullmer, band member

The Band started as a National Guard Unit in Ephraim.

Utah and was inducted into National Service at the end of

1940. The Band was the Reqimental Band of the 1157th Combat

Engineers of the 40th Infantry Division, composed of Utah

and California National Guards. About 1/3 Utah and 2/3

         California.

The Dlvision assembled at Camp San Luis Obispo,

         California early in 1941.

When Pearl Harbor occurred we were moved to the Los

Angeles area for Area Defense. After about 2 months the

Band was transferred to The Presidio of Monterey, California

as the Post Band. The Presidio was a Reception Center for

the West Coast and that is where they acquired some of their

finest musicians - many out of the biq name orchestras

(Sammy Kaye, Woody Herman., etc. )

After 6 months at the Presidio the hand was sent to

Camp White, Oregon as the 353rd Enqineer Band

The Band remained with the 353rd General Service

Regiment until the 11177th Engineer Construction Group was

activated on New Caledonia. At that time the Band was

redesignated as the 398th Armed Service Forces Band.

The Band was shipped to Guadalcanal with the 1177th

         Group.
